General Motors communicated to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) yesterday that it will conduct a voluntary safety recall of 1.3 million compact cars to repair a motor in the power steering system.  Vehicles affected are the 2005 – 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2007 – 2010 Pontiac G5; 2005 – 2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005 – 2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico.

Effective immediately, stop the delivery of all new and used models listed above that may be in dealership new or used vehicle inventory.  These vehicles must be held and not delivered to customers or dealer traded until further notice.

The recall was voluntary and initiated by GM. The main purpose of the recall was to ease customers fears after the recent Toyota recalls. The issue is a minor one and has caused no deaths or major accidents. The below memo details the recall further.

Dear GM Dealer:

We want to clarify and expand on a few items surrounding the voluntary safety recall of the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G4, G5, and Pursuit models that was announced late Monday.

First and foremost, owners and customers need to understand that even if power steering assist cuts out suddenly, these vehicles can be steered manually.  The steering effort required could be greater below 15 miles per hour, but steering control is always possible.  This condition typically presents itself in the 20,000-30,000 mile range.

We are conducting this recall out of concern for the customer’s peace of mind. While we have the same Electric Power Steering (EPS) system in the Chevrolet HHR and Saturn ION, these vehicles are not included in the recall because every vehicle has unique tuning, tires and chassis, which causes some vehicles to be more susceptible to this condition than others.

We are working with the steering system supplier on repair scenarios, which could include steering motor repair or replacement, or one of several possible remanufacturing strategies.  We will share more, including when customers can expect notification, as soon as we have all the details worked out.

MotorWeek presented two awards to Chevrolet, including MotorWeek’s Best Sport Coupe award for the Camaro, and MotorWeek’s Best Small Utility award for the Equinox. The editorial staff of MotorWeek test drives more than 150 cars, trucks and utilities each year. Drivers’ Choice Award winners are chosen following a comprehensive evaluation of factors that matter most to consumers – performance, technology, practicality and value.  

Chevrolet also collected three awards from the first-ever Internet Car and Truck of the Year. A panel of 12 online automotive journalists named the Equinox the Jurors’ Truck of the Year. In addition, the Equinox was named the Public Truck of the Year, and Camaro the Public Car of the Year, based on more than 50,000 reader votes cast online.

Finally, IntelliChoice named recognized three 2009 Chevrolets as the Best Overall Value in their segments, including the Corvette, Silverado, and Silverado HD. The IntelliChoice Best Overall Values identify vehicles with the best total costs to own and operate a vehicle for the first five years of ownership. Selected from over 1,700 2009 model-year domestic and import vehicles, the Best Overall Value of the Year awards recognize the best car values by class.

On December 3rd, “White Lightning” returned to the Indianapolis Chevrolet Dealer homesite location Hare Chevrolet. Chris Williams, was very disappointed he had to return the 2010 Camaro. He had many the BEST experience and excitement from driving the Camaro for two straight days. Chris gave numerous daily updates on Hare Chevrolets Facebook of his enjoyment with the Camaro. His three children loved to be taken to school in the morning in the Camaro and all of their friends to see them. When comparing the NEW model to a 1972 and 1987 Chevrolet Camaro, he only had positive things to mention; such as, the speed it can reach and the smoothness of the drive was unbelievable.

Hurry in before December 31, 2009, all tax payers will have a deduction for state, local sales and excise taxes when buying a new vehicle in 2009. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) gives a tax break if a new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle is purchased; however, used or leased vehicles don’t qualify.

The deduction is limited to state, local and excise taxes paid on the first $49, 000 of an eligible vehicle. Also, a deduction reduced for joint filers with modified adjusted gross incomes (MAGI) between $250, 000 and $260, 000 and tax payers with a MAGI between $125, 000 and $135, 000. Unfortunately, tax payers with a larger income do not qualify. For states without new car sales tax can also qualify. Deductions would be from other fees or taxes that are a part of new vehicle purchases per unit or sales price by state or local government.

The Auto Assistance Ownership amendment has a federal-income-tax deduction, but not for interest on loans. With the tax break, it helps tax payers buy now and get cash back later on 2009 tax returns.

For an example of a sales tax deduction, if someone purchases a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette at $56,115 right now would save $4,500 off with a cash rebate plus alt 60 day guarantee, also they would have a 7% sales tax up to $49,000 plus tax. Then the buyer can deduct $3,430 ($49,000 x 7%). With a trade-in, a lower sales tax will incur and hten will make a smaller income tax benefit.

1.. Use Common Sense

The cheapest form of defense is to simply employ the anti-theft devices that are standard on all vehicles: locks. Roll up your windows, lock your car and/or convertible top, and take your keys.

2. Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Keep all personal belongings, including iPods, cell phones and other valuables, out of sight.

3. Window Etching

Consider etching a tracking number onto the car’s glass surfaces. Etching makes vehicles less attractive to thieves because all windows must be replaced before the car can be tagged with a fake VIN for resale.

4. Park in Well-Lighted Areas

Thieves obviously prefer to work undetected. You can make it harder for them by parking in well-lighted areas.

5. Park in Attended Lots

Auto thieves do not want people around to witness their crimes and thus tend to target unattended parking areas.

6. Be Careful with Keys at the Valet

If your trunk and glove box use the same key as the door, have one of them changed. Don’t give a parking attendant easy access to your glove box and trunk (and don’t leave important documents in them). Upon returning, check the tires, the spare and the battery to make sure they’re the same as those you had when you parked.

“Kill” switches, fuel cut-offs, and smart keys (which come standard on some vehicles) can be extremely effective at preventing auto theft, according to the NCIB. Generally speaking, if your car won’t start, it won’t get stolen. Kill switches can be a simple on/off switch that you or a locksmith can install ($10 to $125).

10. Tracking Devices

Satellite-based communications/tracking systems, like BMW’s Assist and GM’s OnStar, can help law enforcement find and recover stolen vehicles. More vehicles are being equipped with these systems from the factory; they require a yearly subscription service and typically cost between $300 and $1,000. Some will even inform you if your vehicle has been moved without your knowledge. Third-party systems include LoJack, which emits a signal to police when a vehicle is stolen, and Millennium Plus ($350 to $1,000), which employs GPS and wireless technology to track stolen vehicles.

DETROIT – General Motors announced today that it will offer a Satisfaction Guarantee to eligible buyers of new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. The guarantee allows customers to return their vehicle to their dealer between 31 and 60 days of purchase and receive a refund of the purchase price for the vehicle.

The announcement is part of a larger “May the Best Car Win” marketing campaign that demonstrates GM’s confidence in its vehicles when compared head-to-head with the most competitive vehicles in each vehicle segment.

The new Satisfaction Guarantee bolsters GM’s existing industry-leading consumer coverage, which includes a transferrable100,000-mile/five-year (whichever comes first) limited powertrain warranty, roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.

“We think if consumers give us a fair chance and look at the facts on the things that matter most to them, like design, fuel economy, warranty and safety, our vehicles are the best choices – that’s what makes an offer like this possible,” said Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman, Marketing and Communications. “The Cadillac SRX and CTS Wagon, the Buick LaCrosse, the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, for instance, are all outstanding new products. The “clock is ticking” will be the theme of the sale. Hare Chevrolet anticipates an uptick in business over the holiday weekend.

McKain recently commented on GM’s bankruptcy and the lack of customer service that GM dealerships are coping with. Local Indianapolis dealership, Hare Chevrolet contacted McKain about visiting the dealership and seeing what a real customer service experience is all about. Courtney Cole, owner and Vice President of Hare acknowledged that some GM companies are struggling and not treating their customers as they should, but asked him not to categorize them all as the same. He took up the offer.

He met with one of the salesman, Ty Lowery, and was quite surprised at what he found. He “couldn’t begin to believe the number of features that the [2009] Malibu had for its price. The car seemed to me — someone who isn’t a car expert, but is the typical customer — to be very well constructed and engineered. In fact, it was a TOTAL surprise! This is one heck of a car!”

McKain continues in his blog stating that his experience with Hare Chevrolet was “TERRIFIC!” He notes that it isn’t fair to stereotype all the dealerships as the same and “for a better experience…find a better dealer…like Hare.”

Monica Peck and Courtney Cole, 6th Generation Owners of Indiana Chevrolet Dealer, Hare Chevrolet, were so impressed they decided to pay the students a visit and see if there was any way they could educate or learn from them. They took a 2010 Camaro Pace Car and a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid.

Monica and Courtney talked about the importance of credit.  They went through three different scenarios using kids in the class.  Monica acted as the car salesperson and Courtney acted as a banker.  Kids were called up and they acted as customers.  There were three different scenes where the kids tried to purchase vehicles and had to be approved by the “bank”.  In one case, the bank denied one of the “customers” because he did not pay his bills in a timely manner.  A great time was had by all and both groups learned from the exercise.
